The museums of Lima are certainly plentiful and amongst the best in Peru, although it is unlikely that you will have the time to explore more than just a few. Topics covered at Lima's seemingly endless selection of museums include everything from Peruvian stamps and electricity, to bullfighting, vintage cars, taxidermy, torture, the culture of Peru, and of course, the myriad of past Andean civilisations, such as the Chavins, the Moches and the Incas. Do bear in mind that whilst guided tours are often available, most are solely in Spanish.

One that stands out is the National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology and History of Peru, which is known locally in Lima as the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Arqueologia e Historia, and home to some fascinating scale models of prominent archaeological sites.




Information about famous local ruins and Peru's rich heritage is to be found within the Museo de la Museo de la Nacion, where highlights include Nazca pottery and Chavin stone carvings. The Museo de Oro del Peru became especially well known in 2001, when a scandal claimed that many of its gold exhibits were in fact fakes.

Today, this museum remains popular in Lima and assures its visitors that all exhibits are 100% bone fide. Upstairs, the Arms Museum is reputed to be the world's biggest.
